This post comes to you from the Bonsu Cocoa College in Ghana where I am ensconced in a meeting with a variety of people all concerned with eliminating child labour in the Ghanaian cocoa industry and improving the lives of cocoa farmers. I don’t usually mention where I am and what I’m doing as I write my posts, but this time it seemed significant. I have written much about this past year’s series of retrogrades and about the linking of spiritual values to practical action, of personal development to participation in community. Triggering my midheaven axis these retrogrades saw me eventually leave my home to travel here to work on this project – and now with the coming full moon we have a culminating phase of these retrogrades as the full moon will form an exact t-square to Jupiter who is now sat upon the degree at which Venus turned direct back last June (note the red right-angled triangle in the chart below).
It is no accident that the full moon makes this tense t-square aspect – astrologically it is often the case that particular areas of the sky are sensitised by a planet standing still on it and then that point is revisited in a number of ways to ensure that whatever changes we need to make in our lives and that these transits can help to illuminate have the best chance of being implemented. This time the Moon and Sun square to the earlier Venus station point puts pressure on those issues raised by the Venus retrograde, especially questioning whether you have put into practice the realisations of the time of the station direct at the end of last June.
It is worth looking again at the Sabian symbol for the Venus direct degree as it has a key bearing on how we can best understand the energies of this full moon:
(GEMINI 8°): AROUSED STRIKERS SURROUND A FACTORY.
KEYNOTE: The disruptive power of the ambitious mind upon the organic wholeness of human relationship.
We are dealing in this sequence of symbols with man’s discovery of the new powers residing in his special contribution to the total organism of this planet Earth — his consciousness and aggressive mind. The first stage (Phase 66) dealt with oil, the typical form of energy which the modern mind has made available. (These symbols were revealed before atomic energy was even thought of as a practical possibility.) Now we see in this new symbol a pictorial indication of what the use of this intellect-generated energy inevitably leads to: industrial unrest and violence. As man manages to rape the earth in order to demonstrate his power and intensify his pleasures and his sense of proud mastery, conflicts and disruptive processes are inevitably initiated.
The arousal is presented to us here in its collective social form because we have reached the emotional-cultural level. The type of power generated by the analytical intellectual faculties is essentially disruptive; it is based on the destruction of matter, and invites egocentric hoarding and spoliation — and, in general, privileges of one kind or another. This leads to a REVOLT AGAINST PRIVILEGES.
Of course this symbol can refer to internal, personal experiences as well as social ones – and much will depend upon where in your own, personal chart it falls. But what will be a common factor in the lessons it brings are questions and experiences that teach us how to find a balance between our need to be valued as individuals and the part we play in contributing to something much larger than us – if we are privileging one over the other then this full moon will bring some further understanding about how we are doing that and what we might do in order to ensure the right balance is struck.
At the time of the full moon the Sun is moving into a conjunction with Chiron thus emphasising the link between Chiron and the lessons of the past year – especially indicating where we feel some deep sense of spiritual hurt or incompleteness. This full moon could well highlight these issues and bring an emotional tone into them. As this is a full moon it is an opposition between the Sun and Moon, and oppositions often highlight issues in relationships of all kinds – if there you have a sense that your relationships are not providing you with the spiritual support you need then this is likely to be highlighted at this time.
This conjunction of the Sun with Chiron is a precursor to Jupiter once more completing the square to Chiron, repeating the earlier Venus squares – I have written about this in Chiron stations retrograde and also in A Slow Shift Forwards. This is a challenge to our philosophy, our sense of justice, the social structures our lives support and that support us. The question still is ‘are these fulfilling your spiritual needs?’ If the answer to that is ‘no’ then this full moon gives a great opportunity to get some clarity about where and how something is missing and what can be done about it. Jupiter is once again conjunct asteroid Themis, indicating that if we listen we can receive some good advice at this time – Themis is the Greek goddess of good counsel.
The Sabian symbols for the full moon are also worth a look:
The Moon gets to understand how emotions can be channelled into some kind of socially productive and appreciated form. Emotions here are not things that run out of control and take us over, they are a means by which we can channel energy, communicate and express and in so doing reach out to others:
(VIRGO 8°): A FIVE-YEAR-OLD CHILD TAKES A FIRST DANCING LESSON.
KEYNOTE: Learning to use one’s capacity for emotional self-expression according to cultural standards.
The process of emotional experiencing under controlled situations is shown now to demand self-induced, active movement; yet the movements are still conditioned, if not totally determined, by cultural and thus collective patterns. The individual can express his own individual character only according to traditional modes. He is still entirely responsible to his teacher or guru. Yet new perspectives are now open to him.
At this third stage of the five-fold thirty-second sequence of symbols we witness at work the transitional phase which may lead to mastery. The child-consciousness is still dominated by some form of authority; but if the child is “five years old,” the implication is that he is entering ‘ the level of conscious manhood, represented by the number 5, the five-pointed star which outlines at least the POTENTIALITY OF INITIATION.
Meanwhile the Sun, the energy of ‘ego’ in its most pure form, gets to understand how we can contribute – in many ways how we are expected to use our unique talents to contribute to the well-being of others. There is a question about whether individual talents should be put to use for the benefit of others before they are used as a means to self-fulfilment. Which is perhaps a bit of a chick-and-egg question but one worth thinking about at this time nevertheless:
(PISCES 8°): A GIRL BLOWING A BUGLE.
KEYNOTE: A call to participation in the service of the race, as an evolutionary crisis approaches.
This symbolic picture presents another aspect of the emotional relationship between the individual and the collectivity of human beings. It can also be related to the old feminist movement or the present women’s liberation. In traditional symbolism the woman refers more specifically to the biological and psychic aspect of human life; she is seen primarily as the mother, and/or the intuitive or “psychic” type of person. A new race of human beings may well be slowly unfolding some of its potential of consciousness and fulfillment. The individual who envisions this evolutionary development “sounds the call.” He or she is both seer-herald and mutant. In that sense such a human being is both an individual true to his original nature and a dedicated person — dedicated to the future he or she holds in latency as does a seed in mutation.
At this third stage of the sixty-eighth five-fold sequence the two preceding phases blend in a new form of consecration of the individual to the Whole. Tomorrow acts through today; it SUMMONS men to rebirth.
Finally for this full moon we have Mercury retrograde conjunct Mars, and both trine the North Node, the path of future karma. As I have noted in my Mercury retrograde post, this is also highlighting the lessons of the past retrograde series. The combination of Mars and Mercury together, especially with Mercury retrograde, could lead to feelings of intense frustration, a desire to be more active but not entirely sure how – Mars wants to do, but Mercury is holding back and both in Pisces it’s as if there is a desire for something intangible, just out of reach, but so very possible. It is in fact a great energy for yoga, walking meditation, dance or activity that can get you into ‘the zone’ where you will be able to gain great insights provided you don’t expect them to be overly rational or able to be put easily into words.
All in all the energies of this full moon are lining up in a very powerful way to ensure we have ‘got the message’ of the past year or so, ensuring we have put things into action as best as we can. This is important as the next month brings the build up to the superior conjunction of Venus and the Sun and we are tipped into dealing more fully with the energy of the cardinal square and the impact that will have on our personal lives.
