The third eclipse – we can see clearly now the rain has gone

Tomorrow, 25th May, brings the third of the three eclipses of April/May 2013 and like the first of the three, back on 25th April it is a very partial eclipse that will hardly be seen at all. Again, like the 25th April eclipse this glancing contact between the energies of the Sun and Moon could be hardly perceptible – and could equally spin off in surprising and unexpected ways bringing more impact than would seem possible from such a relatively small contact.

From an astronomical as well as astrological point of view this eclipse is interesting because it marks the beginning of a long term series of eclipses – eclipses are grouped into saros cycles, families of eclipses that stretch over spans of thousands of years and this particular eclipse begins saros 150. So it introduces a new cycle. In worldly rather than personal terms what begins now will reach a peak in the years around 2650 and then gradually decline until the end of the series in 3275. Looking at the chart for the eclipse can help to show what kinds of things are falling under the focus of the eclipse.

May lunar eclipse 2013

The eclipse itself is forming a very close t-square with Neptune. Neptune is very much in his element in Pisces – he’s dreaming dreams and having great thoughts, feelings and impressions – but maybe not so very good at doing anything about them. He’s acting as a great channel to allow all kinds of inspiration into our lives – but as well as inspiration we can also find he’s letting in illusions, delusions and general fogginess as well. With the eclipse Neptune comes under a lot of stress and while he feels he’s being very mystical and spiritual he might just find himself accused of being flaky, unreliable and downright deceptive. So the eclipse might just bring to our attention people and influences in our lives which we thought were one thing and which turn out to be quite another once they come under any kind of scrutiny. We could find ourselves waking up wondering how on earth we managed to be so thoroughly taken in by something or someone.

Mars is moving into this t-square as well, bringing with him a sense of anger and the potential for violent reactions either directed towards us or coming from us. Try not to over-react and tune into the more positive manifestation of this energy – which is inspiring, poetic and creative. We’ll benefit from trips out in the open air, by the sea and with good friends which will all allow us to get a sense of being uplifted rather than undermined at this time. Another word of caution – Neptune rules drink and drugs and poisons of all kinds, so be careful what you take into yourself around the time of the eclipse as it could have unexpected and untoward consequences.

At the time of this eclipse Mercury and Venus are still conjunct and are joined by True Lilith – this combination of personal planets with Lilith suggests that there are aspects of our personal lives, attitudes and responses which will be challenged – areas where we are sensitive and may erupt into anger, withdraw into a sense of isolation and rejection or experience a sense of loss. The combination falls in Gemini showing that the area where these issues will be felt will be around communication, messages and so on. Lilith is concerned with aspects of life that are denied or repressed, either within ourselves or in the wider world and so the energy of this eclipse has the potential to give voice to issues about which we have been silent for too long – it’s time to speak out. Plus both Venus and Mercury are moving fast into a conjunction with Jupiter – making it very hard indeed not to speak out – much will be said at this time, many messages and other bits of information coming in which will help us plan for the future. Jupiter and Mercury will both benefit from a bit of Venusian artistry – try to make your messages beautiful or loving in some way and they will find a more willing audience. Similarly, listen to those people who are expressing some genuine care and concern for you – if you are stuck in any kind of Neptune influenced vagueness it is these messages of beauty and love which help to show the route out, the right path to choose.

In addition to this, Vesta, guardian of the hearth and home and the sacred, spiritual fire that lights up humanity is in direct opposition to Pluto, guardian of the underworld given charge of all things underhand, secretive and manipulative. Vesta is in Cancer and is focused on guarding family and home – the roots of our social life, she is concerned with bringing the spiritual back into the home, the centre of our ordinary lives, taking it from the power of traditional authorities and reclaiming it as a nourishing force. Pluto is involved in power struggles with authority and the world of work and organisations. Both are in exact square to Uranus making a very tight and tense t-square with Uranus feeling somewhat explosive and wanting nothing more than to please himself and go his own way. So the energy of the ongoing cardinal square is lit up by Vesta at the time of the eclipse and shows the shape of things to come later in the year when these points come under stress again through the series of retrogrades. It’s a struggle between family, authority and self and what makes our lives feel truly meaningful. And it’s one which has some time yet to play out – Vesta reminds us to guard that which is most precious to us, that which lights us up and makes us feel part of something.

We also have Saturn moving into a very close trine with Neptune and with that comes the desire to make something concrete of our hopes and dreams. At this time it is more than usually possible to achieve this as the energy runs freely through the trine, however it is also an easy-to-miss opportunity as it is very easy to take the energy of trines for granted and only miss them once they’ve moved out of effect. This energy stays with us throughout the coming few months so make the most of it – it reaches a peak as the trine becomes exact in mid-June and again in mid-July as Saturn turns forwards and heads right back into it. So from now until the end of Jult this energy is very strong and hopes and dreams that come glimmering through the eclipse could well benefit from it if you put your mind to it.

What is more we also have Psyche making the second of her three passes across the North Node path of future karma. Psyche, sense of our soul’s deepest desire, is moving backwards at the moment re-looking at issues, ideas and images that she passed by before but now wants to revisit – again in these we may find hints of the most fulfilling path for us to take in the future, and this will be even more clear towards the end of July when she passes the North Node again, this time moving forwards.

psyche travels to the underworld

So all in all, this eclipse, in large ways or small ways, is set to bring about a clearer sense of where we are headed with our lives, what we need to do to get there, and also how this contributes to wider issues. It is also likely to bring us opportunities to speak up about those issues we care most about and to start to put in place something concrete and lasting that will help to address these issues.

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
