Sky surfing – your challenge over the next couple of weeks is to keep your balance!

This year the holiday season is very eventful in terms of astrology – we have the cardinal square being triggered by a superior conjunction of Mercury and also by a new Moon on New Year’s day while Venus is turning back on herself, heading back into that cardinal square herself, just as Jupiter is. We can take from this an overarching message that clarity and patience in communications, self-awareness and a commitment to strong values will enable us to tune into the positive, creative power of the cardinal square and avoid its potentially aggressive and explosive nature.

Capricorn

Capricorn

We start to feel the mood change noticeably from the 21st when the Sun moves into Capricorn and picks up on the slower pace demanded by Saturn ruled Capricorn. This is a good time to take a deep breath and think about your priorities over the coming days – it’s important not to over-stretch yourself and keep in mind what it is you really want to get out of this season. Also on the 21st Venus turns retrograde in Capricorn reinforcing the requirement to have a good look at what values you are committed to at this time of year – what are you really wanting to mark or to celebrate? Venus retrograde in Capricorn brings something of a pensive mood rather than full-on party spirits and it is likely to feel a whole lot more fulfilling to go with that flow and maybe consider some of the deeper, more spiritual messages of this time rather than the glitzy, consumer-culture that could lead to fractious exchanges in over-loaded shops and malls.

On the 24th this is intensified even more as Mercury also moves into Capricorn and gets serious about the messages he wants to communicate. This is a time to make sure you are listening to those close to you – people will be making efforts to express things that are important to them, don’t fly off the handle if something is said that rubs you up the wrong way, instead try to understand exactly why something is being said and don’t take it personally. Lots of people are feeling the pressure at the moment and it is easy to fly off the handle and then regret it later. All this emphasis on Capricorn asks for less of a reactive attitude and more consideration and patience being put into our interactions.

Meanwhile Sun sextile Neptune brings a more poetic, dreamy and spiritual quality which we can make the most of if we just try to tune into it – a time for some quieter moments and finding some spirit of inspiration in music, poetry, lovely smells or spending time by water.

On the 25th we get the cardinal square under tremendous pressure with Mars opposite Uranus – for those cooking celebratory feasts make sure you’ve done the preparation as an air of tension could easily spill out into arguments and accidents. Have a plan B too – the most important thing is to put energy into enjoying time with loved ones, playing fun games, going for walks and so on. (Don’t forget to make sure electrical presents have batteries to go with them and make sure the Christmas Tree lights are wired up safely!) The Moon is also activating this energy making people emotionally highly strung and hyper-sensitive – maintain a sense of humour and an ability to laugh at yourself and walks and games should be full of laughs. An applying sextile between Mercury and Neptune should help with that – if it all gets too much put some comedy on the TV or radio and have a chuckle.

 Mercury superior conjunction 1213

Following the sextile to Neptune on the 26th Mercury moves into his conjunction with the Sun on the 29th this is the superior conjunction following the Scorpio Rx period and marks some kind of completion of issues that were highlighted or under some kind of scrutiny during the retrograde period back at the end of October and beginning of November. It should also bring clarity around communications, especially if you take your time (remember this is Capricorn, ruled by Saturn) and are careful about saying what you mean and listening to others. This superior conjunction is square Uranus, conjunct Pluto, square Mars, thoroughly triggering the cardinal square and could indicate a breakthrough regarding the tensions inherent in that square. Uncomfortable though it might be this could be the best time to resolve any issues that have been hanging around for the past couple of months – or even the past couple of years. What’s more it’s an auspicious time as it could clear the air in time for the New Year and its accompanying new moon. The superior conjunction is accompanied by asteroid Toro considered to link the energies of Mars and Pluto thus emphasising a somewhat aggressive or forceful energy underlying this conjunction which can be beneficial if channelled into constructive and physical projects but if frustrated can emerge in power struggles. Erato is also present at the superior conjunction – Erato is the Muse of lyric poetry, particularly erotic and love poetry suggesting that for some the best expression of these times (and if necessary the best way to make up) will be between the sheets. But for all a delicate turn of phrase will go a long way towards easing the transit through the cardinal square and in the run down to the new moon.

New Year New Moon 2014

That new moon comes on the 1st and is conjunct Pluto so another trigger of the cardinal square. It’s a new moon though so indicates ushering in new attitudes and approaches. The new moon is also conjunct Mercury so there are likely to be increased communications at this time that indicate just what these new beginnings and directions are. It’s a pretty tense new moon with its square to Mars and Uranus and moving into an opposition with Jupiter and really starts to show where events leading up to this point have brought us. If we have managed to be true to ourselves and our values over the preceding few days and have also managed to avoid being reactive and aggressive then this really can show how the ground has been cleared for new, constructive developments in our relationships (Mars in Libra), in expressing our own individuality (Uranus in Aries) and in achieving the right balance between the demands of work, society, family and our own need to express our particular sense of spirituality (Jupiter in Cancer opposite Pluto in Capricorn).

So it is that we begin 2014, almost with a kind of test, examining how well we have managed to ride the energies of the cardinal square being triggered over what for many is a tense enough time anyway. It doesn’t all go away after the new moon of course, the cardinal square remains in force throughout 2014 and into the first part of 2015, but this time can indicate a turning point, a time when we are now able to effectively manage these energies and use them to build something constructive and visionary.

A gentle and creative full Moon

On 17th December we have a full Moon in Gemini indicating a time of culmination regarding events and experiences over the past couple of weeks, since the new Moon on 3rd December. At first glance the chart for this full Moon is not particularly striking, the cardinal square, the key ongoing configuration of the moment, is loose. Although Mars is moving into opposition with Uranus which does spice things up a bit – this could lead to overexcitement or enthusiasm which in turn could bring on accidents so watch that one.  Mars will do this just before he enters his shadow so watch for unsettling events over the next couple of weeks as these form the context for Mars retrograde phase in the first half of next year.

Gemini Full Moon 2013

Meanwhile Venus is poised ready to turn back upon herself, she is hovering in the skies feeling the pull of the Sun and the journey she must make in order to re-emerge as the morning star after her downward/inward/darkward trip.

But these are things yet to come, the full Moon itself does not aspect either Mars or Venus indicating that it is a time of culmination of things to be dealt with before the full force of the retrogrades are felt.  On the other hand the Moon does aspect Saturn via a quintile and the Sun aspects Chiron via a biquintile – these are creative, constructive aspects indicating opportunities to achieve something lasting at this time, something that will be useful to us through the coming months of the retrogrades, also, with Chiron’s involvement, something ultimately healing and bringing wisdom. Additional clues to the power of this full Moon are found by the proximity of Quaoar, Panopaea and Psyche to the Sun – these are so close to the Sun that their influence is difficult to spot because the power of the Sun is so strong, but the sensitive Moon can pick up on it. Quaoar is the name of a Native American creator being who dances the world into existence from chaos while Psyche represents the desire of our soul to find concrete manifestation. Meanwhile Panopaea is one of the Nereids, a sea spirit helpful to sailors indicating protection and guidance through storms so there is an air to this Moon of protection and guidance while we bring something important to light and turn it into something real – a time when we can make dreams come true if we are sensitive and careful enough.

Nereid riding a sea bull

It’s not a huge, powerful influence so don’t expect big events – this is quite a quiet but creative full Moon. Make the most of it, aspects over the Christmas and New Year period are challenging – their positive expression will mean high energy, high spirits and creativity while a negative expression will bring anger, argument and confrontation. If we make the most of this full moon by bringing to light and dealing with what needs to be dealt with then we prepare the way to get the best from the holiday period!

Mercury pips Venus to the post…

Following the new moon we can see that Venus is slowing down rapidly and what was looking like a promising connection (Venus trine Mars) never comes to fruition, there’s a sense of frustration in that as though something really ought to work but never quite gels – and it could be in any area of our lives but it will involve a connection between Venus type things (art, values, relationships) and Mars type things (energy, action). Instead it is Mercury that makes the connection to Mars so communications pick up speed and might become more assertive and insistent – especially as these two are in mutual reception and Mercury is in Scorpio (watch your tongue, it’s easy to become sarcastic or cutting under this influence.

Meanwhile Venus turns her attention back towards Jupiter and the challenges she faced or connection she made over the past week or so as she made the opposition to Jupiter. It’s as though something is weighing on her mind that she needs to go back and set straight and it’s this feeling that will persuade her to turn back on herself. Before she reconnects with Jupiter however Saturn moves in on the act. This could be a good thing as Saturn convinces Venus that there is some groundwork that needs to be done before she re-forms the Jupiter connection. Jupiter’s involvement with Lilith at the moment shows that there is something deep underlying this movement – in some traditions Lilith is considered the handmaid of Venus, she would bring in workers from the fields to worship at the temple of the Goddess. Her presence at Jupiter’s side looks to me like  a challenge to the establishment coming from somewhere – but whether that challenge is to the establishment of Jupiter (society, religion, law) or the establishment of Venus (art, beauty, love, relationships) isn’t clear, but it is clear that Jupiter is acting out of character at the moment and this has caught the attention of Venus who heads back to have a look and draws in Saturn (hard work, restrictions, boundaries) to help get things straight.

Mercury sextile Mars 1213

Meanwhile at the time of the Mercury sextile to Mars the Moon is lighting up a sextile between Psyche and Eros – there is hope in this that the promise of the Venus trine to Mars will eventually be achieved, but as ever with Psyche there are tests and trials, things that keep the two apart and which need to be overcome.

This is going to take patience and hard work, events that seemed as though they were fleeting or inconsequential from the past couple of weeks are likely to gain significance over the coming weeks of the Venus retrograde. As Saturn connects with Venus the Sun also moves into the inferior conjunction with Venus indicating that there is a lot more to uncover and understand before we truly ‘get’ what has been going on and can make it work effectively for us.

The next phase of the retrograde series begins

We are now well into the middle phases of this retrograde series with Mercury moving out of his shadow as Saturn moves into his, Jupiter is on his way back through his own shadow as Venus gazes at him across the skies as she moves towards the degree of her forthcoming Inferior Conjunction.

Star of Inanna

Star of Inanna

With Mercury’s move out of his shadow some things become clearer, although not necessarily easier – there is still a long way to go. It is a good time to remember that in the Sumerian myth of Inanna’s (Venus’s) descent she goes into the underworld voluntarily, in order to right a wrong, in order to gain deeper understanding or in order to allow others to understand her more fully. She goes in order to gain some sort of power, some mastery (and she certainly emerges more powerful than she was before – one reason why the time of the morning star was seen as a good time to go to war, but more on that another day). We are moving into the time of the retrogrades where we start to understand why we will make the descent.

Venus, planet of personal values is opposed by Jupiter planet of social values – we are challenged to find a balance between what we want for ourselves and what society wants from us. Taking place in the signs of family (Jupiter in Cancer) and work (Venus in Capricorn) we have to find a way to balance ambition and duty and the various expectations others have of us in different parts of our lives. This plays into the Venus retrograde – the coming weeks will see us challenged to find a way to bring together (or choose between) opposing demands on our time and our loyalties. Difficult dynamics at work and art home could start to become stressful and as the cardinal square becomes activated by Mars and then retrograding Venus and Jupiter, it may even become explosive.

fireworks

It’s a good time to make sure we are up to date with breathing exercises and being patient and self-aware because as the pressure rises the explosions could become negatively destructive, they could even become negatively destructive implosions with all the retrograde energy around – the trick will be to have controlled explosions and managed fireworks which help to clear the air and any mess and obstructions without destroying everything else around!

Mercury stations direct – fishing with Neptune in the field of dreams

Today Mercury stands still and prepares to move forwards through the skies again, picking up the pieces of the past few weeks and making sure that everything is sorted out, in order, understood. Until he finally moves out of his shadow on the 27th November we are likely to still feel the effects of the time he has been moving backwards, though hopefully now that he moves forwards again we are clearer about where things are going, what needs to be done and what we want the outcome to be.

Mercury stations direct 101113

Just as Mercury stands still he makes a flowing trine to Neptune who is also standing still ready to move forwards. This imbues the whole mood of the Mercury forward motion with a sense of Neptunian inspiration, dreaminess and vagueness – it may seem that things are even more unclear, confused and difficult to pin down that they have been for the past few weeks. At the same time the mood brings plenty of opportunities to tune into something artistic, inspired and mystical – perhaps you feel more aware of and sensitive to the mystery and beauty of life and just want to spend a little time enjoying it – and why not? Now is the perfect time to do just that – maybe a walk by water or some time spent listening to beautiful music or reading poetry is exactly the way to make the most of this Mercury station.

In fact, any artistic feelings or inspirations we have at the moment are likely to be heightened by the fact that Mercury turns direct while still in sextile to Venus, and because Venus is slowing down for her own retrograde period they never fully move out of this relationship to one another for the whole of the time that Mercury moves forwards through his shadow for the final time and having perfected the sextile just before he stationed direct they will perfect it once more just as he has left his shadow. It definitely is a time for the arts, to tune into your intuition and to use the energy of Venus moving through Capricorn to turn these into something a little more solid than nice ideas or flights of fancy.

Another thing to notice with this station is that the Sun is sitting on the degree at which Mercury went retrograde, highlighting the path he has walked and has yet to walk. The Sun brings some clarity of intention and greater sense of purpose and determination. Meanwhile note Kronos sitting opposite Venus and Pluto – there is some influence around at the moment that might not be too obvious but which will become important by the time Mercury reaches the superior conjunction. That influence has to do with authority, excellence and expertise and indicates a countering or balancing force to the applying Venus conjunction with Pluto – a sense that someone around at the moment has the ability to see through various undercurrents and hidden dynamics in relationships and show the best way of dealing with these. This person could be someone else, it could be yourself, whoever it is they have a sense of perspective which will help in the coming times of emotional intensity and this is being reflected in this Mercury station and in the later superior conjunction.

Still, the ongoing connection between this Mercury retrograde with Saturn does demand hard work and a sense of realism and responsibility – we won’t get the most out of this time if we simply give way to day dreaming. Saturn wants to see more of a sense of commitment to our goals and our dreams – he wants us to demonstrate persistence and patience, so you can bet that the coming few weeks will see situations which require both of these – and that if we aren’t prepared to dig deep and find that persistence and patience then all those lovely ideas and imaginings we are having at the moment will come to nothing.

On the 27th November Mercury finally leaves his shadow and the way is clear for moving forward, we should have set in order anything that is currently a bit messy, especially in terms of communications, paperwork, finances and so on – this is what we need to do to have clear ground for really making progress in achieving our dreams. Between then and now Mercury will once more move across the North Node path of future karma (on the 19th), he will sextile Pluto on the 21st – this is a day for breakthroughs in key communications with those in positions of power and influence whether in your external or internal world. Next comes the conjunction with Saturn on the 26th, just before he leaves his shadow – make sure t’s are crossed and i’s are dotted now, and don’t be tempted to get impatient with anyone at this time, it won’t pay off! After that it’s all systems go right on to the end of the year when we should finally see our efforts bearing fruit as Mercury reaches the superior conjunction with the Sun, no coincidence that the superior conjunction takes place in Saturn’s own sign of Capricorn and conjunct Pluto, ruler of this latest retrograde. What is more it also happens in direct opposition to Kronos representing the highest authority and attainment of excellence – the question here is, with the superior conjunction in opposition to this point, is this energy embodied by another in our life or is it something we are able to display to others ourselves? It is certainly a time when we will see how much respect for our achievements comes from others, how much our hard work is recognised. There is potential here to form a strong bond with someone who will help us weather the coming storm of the cardinal square being activated by Venus, Mars and Jupiter during their retrograde phases – consolidation of a promise made during this Mercury Rx perhaps. Watch for it – it could mean a lot!

Solar eclipse and Mercury through the North Node – the messenger highlights the path of future karma

Sunday 3rd November brings a solar eclipse and a conjunction of Mercury Rx with the North Node. The solar eclipse, falling in Scorpio, is ruled by Mars and Pluto and it makes a creative sextile to both these planets indicating opportunities to be gained if the effort is put in. Mars and Pluto are separating from a trine to one another showing that the conditions for these opportunities have already been established while the solar eclipse, separating from both Mars and Pluto show that the eclipse brings forward opportunities or circumstance that have already been set in motion. In secretive Scorpio and with the light of the Sun being obscured by the emotional force of the Moon the energy at this time is working in hidden or difficult to see ways – we know we must put in the effort, the aspects tell us we must build on circumstances set in motion in the past, but what the outcome will be is hidden and may well be unexpected.

The theme of hard work is amplified by the eclipse conjunct Saturn who is in mutual reception with Pluto – in other words these two are working well together as a team uncovering hidden motives, power plays and manipulations and bringing them into consciousness so that they can be unpicked and put back together in more constructive ways. Do not expect things to be handed to you on a plate over the next few months (the span of influence of this eclipse will be approximately 3 years but it will be properly kick-started into action in August next year when Mars will move to a conjunction with the degree of the eclipse), benefits will come for those who work, who make the effort.

solar exlipse 31113

The tone of the eclipse is heightened by Mercury’s conjunction with the North Node which takes place just as the eclipse is starting to form. This is the second of Mercury’s conjunctions with the North Node over the last few weeks and this time Mercury is moving retrograde, going back over things, re-thinking, re-imagining. Whilst the movement of Mercury is backwards, inwards and looking towards the past the influence of the North Node is to propel into the future – so we are going backwards to go forwards. Think back to the end of the 1st week of October when Mercury first moved through the North Node because it is likely that conversations you had or messages you received then are significant at this time.

Over the next two weeks Mercury is concerned with sorting out issues from the past in order to clear the way for easier movement in the future. A fairly intense encounter with both the Sun and Saturn and influenced by Mars and Pluto has coloured communications and Mercurial things over the past days, now Mercury moves back out of that into a more pleasant space, he will turn direct shortly after making a sextile to Venus and a trine to Neptune – artistic, dreamy and inspirational influences that seem to be just what Mercury was looking for as it gives him the momentum to start moving forwards again, back through the North Node on the 19th November, this time moving direct.

Mercury NN 191113

Significantly, all these conjunctions of Mercury through the North Node take place on 7+˚ Scorpio for which the Sabian symbol is ‘a calm lake bathed in moonlight’. This image is suggestive of the reflective qualities of the human mind when it is able to calm itself sufficiently. The task is to be able to still the continual chatter of the mind, calm the ever active Mercury down a bit so he can get some sense of a deeper, more purposeful direction. This is important because by the time Mercury has reached this point Jupiter is moving backwards himself indicating a deeper look at philosophical and religious issues while Venus is just poised on the edge of her shadow hinting at a more contemplative mood over the coming months where we will evaluate our actions and judge just how well we have lived up to our expectations of ourselves, particularly in our relationships with others and the values we bring into them.

calm lake moonlight

All in all Sunday 3rd brings an opportunity to listen to the future and to understand how we can work to build on the opportunities of the past while removing some of the ingrained patterns and reactions. Just a little time taken for reflection will help to make the most of this energy.

Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn

In my last post I wrote about the interconnections between this Mercury retrograde cycles and the movements of Mars, linking it to the last Mars retrograde cycle back at the beginning of 2012. Now I want to highlight another aspect of this Mercury retrograde – its tying together of the movements of big-hitting planets Jupiter and Saturn.

Mercury is playing a bit of a go-between role with these planets at the moment. Jupiter and Saturn are in a wide trine to one another which means their energies are working well together. However they have been moving apart ever since mid-July – it seems that something agreed upon then has not been fully put into action. That last trine of Jupiter and Saturn occurred at the same time (within minutes) of Uranus turning retrograde so it seems as though some issues to do with ideals, technology or general surprises and unexpected happenings have been impacting upon the ability of Jupiter and Mars to deliver upon their agreement. That agreement will be somehow connected to the big themes of Jupiter and Saturn – philosophy, society, community, responsibility and hard work. It is also connected to issues of home and security with Jupiter in Cancer while Saturn in Scorpio focuses on firming up shared agreements and making sure there are no nasty hidden extras in the small print.

the close involvement of both Neptune and Lilith with Jupiter and Saturn in this chart indicates that things are not going to be straightforward – there is a sense of inspiration, imagination leading to possibility. There is also a sense of cynicism, of wariness after having been betrayed in the past – all these issues ahve to be worked through – perhaps no wonder, then, that things haven’t been quite so smooth-sailing as we first thought they would be...

There is also a sense of cynicism, of wariness after having been betrayed in the past – all these issues ahve to be worked through – perhaps no wonder, then, that things haven’t been quite so smooth-sailing as we first thought they would be…

Now Mercury is working to bring these two back together, to remember what it was they agreed upon back in July and to set things in motion so that it can be achieved. Having made the conjunction to Saturn, Mercury is now moving into a trine with Jupiter – however, before he perfects that trine he heads back towards Saturn, double-checking arrangements, agreements and contracts. As he does this Jupiter heads back to make the connection with Saturn – it looks as though Mercury’s failure to make the connection gets him looking back and he realises that Saturn isn’t quite there with him just yet. So Jupiter heads backwards as Saturn heads forwards and Mercury again does an about turn and heads forwards again to connect first with Saturn and then with Jupiter, passing on the necessary information so that when Jupiter and Saturn finally do perfect the trine again they have all they need to know at hand.

here all seems fairly smooth sailing, but Venus is about to turn retrograde – there are still issues that need to be properly understood – and Venus retrograde in Capricorn works well with Saturn, her lessons over the coming weeks will serve to drive the message home – we cannot achieve what we hope to achieve without a commitment to making it real, giving it some form, working to bring it into being

That connection is made in mid-December and as they join forces again Uranus is preparing to move forwards again. The connection is also made just as Saturn crosses the place in the heavens where Mercury went (will go) retrograde at the end of October. It is made as Jupiter is retrograde and is therefore concerned with ensuring that all the right conditions are in place – that home concerns are underpinned by the kinds of philosophy that sustains it and is linked into a supportive community – he’s really doing his groundwork on this one. Meanwhile Saturn is in shadow meaning that he will come back to this place in 2014 revisiting arrangements and agreements and thrashing out anything that doesn’t work or that gets in the way of achieving the agreement.

In May 2014 Jupiter and Saturn make their final trine and by this time we will see just what they have managed to achieve.

now the kite pattern of the summer of 2013 is repeated, but it has moved on some way. Chiron (and Eros) are fully integrated into this repeating the theme of giving things concrete, manifest form. The cardinal square is still strong, highlighted by Mars still in his shadow and working hard to figure out relationship issues along with both Vesta and Ceres, goddesses of hearth and home and husbanding and emotions being shocked into action by Uranus in Aries – is this really giving us what we need, what we want, what we had agreed. The kite gives life and inspiration – the cardinal square gives motivation and this brings the final stages of the opportunity to use this energy

In everyday terms what we are looking at here is a feeling that something ought to be delivering more than is actually is, something should be more settled and fixed than it actually is. Something should be easier than it actually is. The coming months will unpick what is underlying these situations so that we can see their dynamics more clearly and are able to act upon that knowledge to achieve a more balanced way of living. It will be hard work though and it will require a sense of vision – a vision of what could be, of how things could work, of how society and community could be more sustaining and of how we can work to make that real. This vision will be both challenged and crystallised by the coming Venus and Mars retrograde cycles which also tie into the current flows – but more about that at a later date.
