Although I have already put much of this information in the post retrograde series 2013-2014 I thought it would be useful to have a look at the Sabian symbols for this coming series of cardinal retrogrades beginning with Mercury who turns retrograde in Cancer, just as Jupiter enters that sign on the 26th June. We have:
Station retrograde at 23deg 06 Can on 26/06/13
A WOMAN AND TWO MEN CASTAWAYS ON A SMALL ISLAND OF THE SOUTH SEAS.
KEYNOTE: The focalization of complex inner potentialities in harmonic and concrete relationships.
The inferior conjunction with the Sun is at 17deg 42 Can on 09/07/13
A HEN SCRATCHING THE GROUND TO FIND NOURISHMENT FOR HER PROGENY.
KEYNOTE: The practical concern with everyday nourishment necessary to sustain one’s outreaching activities.
And the station direct degree is at 13deg 22 Can on 20/07/13
A VERY OLD MAN FACING A VAST DARK SPACE TO THE NORTHEAST.
KEYNOTE: Fulfillment in transcending and changeless wisdom.
This is followed by the superior conjunction and culmination of this Mercury Rx cycle and the start of the next with a superior conjunction at 01 deg 51 Vir on 24/08/13
A LARGE WHITE CROSS DOMINATES THE LANDSCAPE.
KEYNOTE: The wisdom and compassion which only the experience of suffering and isolation can bring.
By the time Mercury has reached the superior conjunction Jupiter is already into his shadow, the Sabian symbols for his retrograde phase are as follows:
Station retrograde is at 20deg 31 Can on 07/11/13
A FAMOUS SINGER IS PROVING HER VIRTUOSITY DURING AN OPERATIC PERFORMANCE.
KEYNOTE: The emotional reward accompanying cultural excellence.
The opposition with the Sun comes on the 5th January:
A MAN STUDYING A MANDALA IN FRONT OF HIM, WITH THE HELP OF A VERY ANCIENT BOOK.
KEYNOTE: A deep concern with problems raised by the process of personality integration.
Opposed by the Sun:
SCHOOL GROUNDS FILLED WITH BOYS AND GIRLS IN GYMNASIUM SUITS.
KEYNOTE: The need for physical activity and play, especially in adolescence.
And then the station direct degree is at 10deg 27 Can on 06/04/14
A CLOWN CARICATURING WELL-KNOW PERSONALITIES.
KEYNOTE: The value of humor in developing objectivity and independence of mind.
So, a very quick interpretation looks like Jupiter will help us get through the more challenging aspects of this series of retrogrades by encouraging us to ‘lighten up’ and not forget that sometimes, in order to develop in a balanced and well-integrated way, we need to just have fun, not take things too seriously.
Meanwhile Venus moves through her own retrograde cycle:
Venus turns stationary retrograde at 28deg 59 Cap on 21/12/13
A WOMAN READING TEA LEAVES.
KEYNOTE: The ability to see the Signature of hidden meaning in every occurrence drawing one’s attention.
The inferior conjunction with the Sun is at 21deg 12 Cap on 11/01/14
BY ACCEPTING DEFEAT GRACEFULLY, A GENERAL REVEALS NOBILITY OF CHARACTER.
KEYNOTE: The realization that one may grow through defeat as well as, and perhaps more than, through success.
While the stationary direct point is at 13deg 33 Cap on 31/01/14
AN ANCIENT BAS-RELIEF CARVED IN GRANITE REMAINS A WITNESS TO A LONG-FORGOTTEN CULTURE.
KEYNOTE: The will to unearth, in our culture as well as in any culture, what has permanent value, and to let go of nonessentials.
The superior conjunction then later comes at 01deg 46 Sco on 25/10/14
A DELICATE BOTTLE OF PERFUME LIES BROKEN, RELEASING ITS FRAGRANCE.
KEYNOTE: The accidental nature of opportunities that impel one to break away from a past, the remembrance of which is still poignant and cherished.
So this Venus retrograde sees things past, forgotten, broken – it’s full of suggestions of defeat, of inevitable leaving and finding ways to recognise the potentials in all of that. These symbols do have a tinge of sadness, so it is probably just as well that Jupiter is bringing a lighter side to all of this.
Finally, the Mars retrograde in Libra has a stationary retrograde degree of 27deg 32 Lib which he reaches on 01/03/14
A MAN BECOMING AWARE OF SPIRITUAL FORCES SURROUNDING AND ASSISTING HIM.
KEYNOTE: The realization, at any level of existence, that one is never alone, and that the “community” — visible or invisible — is sustaining one’s efforts.
The ‘flashpoint’ or opposition to the sun on the 8th April at 18+ Libra and Aries. Mars sits on the degree for which the symbol is:
A GANG OF ROBBERS IN HIDING.
KEYNOTE: Protest against disharmonic social privilege.
While the Sun has:
THE “MAGIC CARPET” OF ORIENTAL IMAGERY.
KEYNOTE: The use of creative imagination.
Mars then turns stationary direct at 09deg 02 Lib on 21/05/14
HAVING PASSED SAFELY THROUGH NARROW RAPIDS, A CANOE REACHES CALM WATERS.
KEYNOTE: The self-control and poise necessary to reach a steady state of inner stability.
With the conjunction with the Sun and the culmination of this cycle coming in June 2015 and neatly tying off both the cardinal and the mutable series of retrogrades by the planet that began the mutable series (Mars) activating the degree where the Venus Retrograde began back in 2012 (23+˚ Gemini) when he marks closure on the cardinal series:
CHILDREN SKATING OVER A FROZEN VILLAGE POND.
KEYNOTE: The use of inhibiting circumstances for the development of character and a transcendent approach to the environment.
All in all the mutable series of retrogrades was filled with imagery suggesting a growing sense of understanding the individual’s relationship to the group, the group’s relationship to the individual and how these two can find balance and, especially, how these two together can serve a greater, spiritual purpose. On the other hand the cardinal series has imagery much more related to individual destiny and finding some spiritual or other mean of rising above difficulties, obstacles and so on. In many ways this reflects the cardinal energy which, as I noted in the post retrograde series 2013-2014 is about understanding the energy that is, not so much about changing things as learning to get the best possible from them. In many ways the mutable series saw us laying out the ground for the cardinal series, plotting our course – in fact, ruled by Mercury as they were they saw us ‘talk the talk’, with the cardinal series it’s time to ‘walk the walk’ in whatever way is right for each of us.
